Jeff Putnam has lived on Chebeague Island since he and his family moved there in 1978. Jeff has fond memories of his childhood on the Island and entrance into the lobstering fleet. “Growing up on Chebeague, I played on the beach and in the water looking for crabs under the seaweed, and small lobsters under rocks. Many of my childhood friends are still on Chebeague, also lobstering. We work together as partners in our lobster company that supports our island way of life.”

“I started lobstering when I was ten years old with my father, Brother, and a handful of old wooden traps. A few years later I worked with my Uncle on his lobster boat putting bands on his catch. After hauling traps by hand throughout my teenage years, and working as a deckhand for many lobstermen, I was able to buy my first big lobster boat. She was a 32 foot wooden boat that I fished while I built up to the maximum limit of 800 traps.”

Jeff is very active in the industry. He serves on the state of Maine Lobster advisory council and the zone management council which helps the state to manage and regulate its premier resource.

Jeff is now Married and has two young sons of his own. He enjoys spending time with his family and friends and taking his boys out on his boat, “Queen B.” to learn about the life he loves.
